Breast enlargement is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. As you move forward with your breast augmentation surgery, there are several decisions that need to be made. One of the choices you will be faced with involves incision placement for your breast implants.
The consultation is your time to discuss the health and aesthetic goals of your procedure with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Louton. Call Blair Plastic Surgery at 800-833-3888 to arrange your initial appointment.
Incision Placement Options
Each patient has different needs, and the type of incision you choose will depend largely on your personal preferences. During a thorough physical examination and consultation, Dr. Louton will go over your options and make a professional recommendation. The type of breast implant you choose will also affect his recommendation for your ideal incision placement.
There are four incision options to choose from:
- Inframammary Incision: The inframammary incision is made in the breast crease that occurs when a patient’s arms are down at her side. Dr. Louton will make a very small incision right where the skin folds under the breast.
- Transaxillary Incision: Dr. Louton makes a transaxillary incision in the armpit area and accesses the breast from a side angle. Many patients appreciate the fact that no scarring is visible around the breast area.
- Transumbilical Incision: Dr. Louton will make a transumbilical incision in the navel area, traveling upward under the skin to access the breast. This type of incision is often recommended when a patient is combining a breast augmentation with another procedure, such as a breast lift.
- Periareolar Incision: The periareolar incision will be made on the edges of the breast’s areola surrounding the nipple. This type of incision is the most popular one at our center because it allows Dr. Louton to easily access the breast area, allowing for greater precision. Also, the scar from a periareolar incision is often one of the most discreet.
It can be very helpful to view before-and-after breast augmentation photos of patients who have used the various implant options. Remember that our recommendations will always be made with your best interests in mind and will be guided by the principles of safety and aesthetics.
