In addition to choosing the ideal type of breast implant and incision location, you will also need to decide on the best implant placement for your needs. Pennsylvania plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Louton will present you with your options, review your breast enlargement goals, and guide you to the best choice for your individual situation.
There are only two possible placement options for breast implants: submuscular, which means "under the muscle," and subglandular, which means "under the gland" or "above the muscle." The pectoral muscle rests underneath the breast tissue and can be felt when you flex your biceps.

Submuscular Implant Placement: Under the Muscle
Submuscular placement tends to provide less definition, so the outlines of the breast implant are generally less noticeable. Submuscular implants have also been shown to cause less interference when it comes to mammogram test readings.
While we must present each option objectively and leave the final decision up to you, we can tell you that submuscular placement is currently our most popular choice.
Subglandular Implant Placement: Above the Muscle
Some patients prefer subglandular placement because of the way the implant rests directly under the breast skin. Implant definition may be more apparent with subglandular placement, depending on the quality and amount of breast tissue that is there.
Which Option Is Best?
The implant placement that is right for you will depend on several factors, including the type and size of implant, as well as your desired result. Dr. Louton and his staff will discuss the benefits of each with you during your confidential consultation. You will also have the chance to compare results with before-and-after breast enlargement photos and patient testimonials.
We have very happy patients who are extremely satisfied with both placement types, and the decision is completely up to you. Our goal is to help you get the results you desire while providing a look that is very natural.
