Male breast reduction surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure among men. Gynecomastia is the medical term for enlarged male breast tissue and it is not uncommon in adolescents, young men and even older gentlemen. Many sufferers of gynecomastia experience significant embarrassment and will sometimes change the way they dress, or avoid activities that require going shirtless, such as swimming, to keep their condition hidden and avoid teasing or social stigma.

Dr. Robert Louton understands men’s distinctive needs, and has helped hundreds of men gain a new sense of body confidence. Find out how he can help you by calling to arrange a consultation at Blair Plastic Surgery.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia occurs as a result of a hormonal imbalance in which testosterone levels are decreased relative to estrogen levels. Several common causes of this imbalance include:

  • Natural hormone changes
  • Certain health conditions
  • Exposure to anabolic steroids or estrogen
  • Side effects of some medications or street drugs
  • Certain cancer treatments

In approximately 25 percent of boys and men, the exact cause remains unknown.

Depending on the cause, gynecomastia often resolves on its own or will resolve after treating any underlying medical conditions. In other times, surgical treatment may be necessary.  The majority of male breast reduction surgery are performed on men ages 19-34 but can be performed on men of any age who are appropriate candidates for surgery.

How Male Breast Reduction Surgery is performed

Generally, liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the breasts, breast tissue can be directly excised, or a combination of the two. However, liposuction of the male breast can be difficult due to the vascular and fibrous nature of the breast tissue.

Dr. Robert Louton often uses ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) to liquefy the fat before it is suctioned out, which results in less trauma to the surrounding structures such as blood vessels and connective tissues. This technique is particularly beneficial in treating areas of fibrotic tissue interspersed with fatty deposits, such as breast tissue in males. There is less bleeding, less bruising and improved ability to contour the breast. Using UAL may, in some instances, eliminate the need for excision of tissue.

In some instances, excisional surgery is necessary and will leave permanent scars that some men may find objectionable.  Blair Plastic Surgery does offer treatments with the ICON 1540 nm fractionated laser to help hasten healing and lessen the appearance of these surgical scars.
