Your eyes are one of the most important features of your face. They can tell others a great deal about your personality and mood. Bright, vibrant, expressive eyes can make you appear more attractive to those around you.
Unfortunately, your eyes also are one of the first features to fall victim to the aging process. By their mid-20s or early 30s, many people experience droopy folds above the eyes and puffy bags underneath them that give off a tired and worn appearance. If you are experiencing these symptoms, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can be an excellent way to help you revitalize the appearance of your eyes.

What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is surgery performed to remove excess skin, muscle, and fat around your eyelids. Blepharoplasty can both improve the appearance and the function of your eyes. As you age, the muscles supporting your eyelids weaken, allowing fat to collect above and below your eyelids. The accompanying sagging often causes impaired vision.
By treating your droopy upper lids and bags beneath your eyes, Pennsylvania eyelid surgeon Dr. Robert Louton can help eliminate the vision problems caused by aging eyelid skin.
Eyelid Surgery Procedure
Eyelid surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation. Depending on whether Dr. Louton treats your upper, lower, or both eyelids, the procedure may take anywhere from one to three hours.
If you have surgery on both eyelids, Dr. Louton will usually start with the upper eyelid. He will make an incision along the natural fold of your upper eyelid in order to remove excess muscle and fat beneath the skin.
For the lower eyelid, Dr. Louton will make an incision just below the lashes in your eye’s natural crease or inside the lower eyelid. Excess fat, muscle, and sagging skin are then removed to reduce the appearance of bags under the eyes.
Can Eyelid Surgery Be Combined With Other Procedures?
Often, Dr. Louton will perform blepharoplasty in conjunction with several other facial rejuvenation procedures such as:
What To Expect While Recovering From Blepharoplasty
You may feel some minor discomfort at the incision sites for a day or two following your eyelid surgery. Many patients choose to wear dark sunglasses for several days to provide enhanced comfort. You may experience slightly blurred vision from the swelling, but this will subside shortly.
It is important to sleep with your head elevated on several pillows for a few days to reduce swelling. All stitches will be removed within a week of surgery, and there will be minimal scarring if any.
When Can I Return To Normal Activity After Eyelid Surgery?
You should expect the following time table for returning to regular activities:
- Reading – two or three days
- Returning to work – approximately one week
- Contact lenses – two weeks or more
- Strenuous activity – three weeks
- Consumption of alcohol – three weeks
Bruising and swelling will be minimal and will subside within a few weeks.
